A brand designer’s advice on effective presentation design

Part of being a brand designer is designing presentation templates (and sometimes actual client presentations). Clients may want to cram a lot of text onto each slide, but the key is to use slides as visual aids that complement the speaker’s message rather than overwhelm the audience. Minimalism works best!

Good typography (fonts) is essential in presentation design. Here’s why:

1. Readability is key for presentation design

Good typography makes content super-readable. It uses the right font sizes spacing between lines and letters, and establishes a clear hierarchy. Headings and subheads stand out, guiding readers smoothly through the text. It’s like giving your eyes a nice little path to follow. Well-chosen fonts and proper spacing make content easy to read, even from a distance. This ensures your audience can quickly grasp key points.

2. Setting the Mood of your presentation and leave-behind

Fonts aren’t just for reading—they set the whole mood of your presentation. Whether it’s bolder styles emphasizing key points or italics for citations, the typeface conveys a certain personality. Think of fancy serifs for a formal presentation or quirky scripts for a casual, creative vibe. It’s like putting your message in the perfect outfit that suits the occasion.

3. Visual hierarchy helps content in presentations

Different font sizes and weights help guide the viewer’s eye and emphasize important information. The full typography package covers all bases — choosing the right fonts, ensuring appropriate sizes, managing spacing, maintaining alignment, and providing enough breathing room. This meticulous approach ensures that your content pops off the screen (or page) and grabs attention effortlessly.

4. Clean, consistent page designs give your presentation a polished look

Clean, consistent typography and visuals give your presentation a polished, cohesive look that reflects well on your brand.

When designing presentations, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use large, legible fonts for headings and key points
  • Limit text on each slide – aim for bullet points rather than paragraphs
  • Incorporate plenty of white space to avoid visual clutter
  • Align elements consistently for a clean, organized look

Choose colors that are in your brand guidelines

5. Avoid text-heavy slides

Sometimes, clients request text-heavy slides. I wiggle out of this by creating two versions:

  1. A minimalist slide deck for the live presentation
  2. A more detailed handout or digital document to share afterward (this is also a great way to collect email addresses and have a reason to follow up with your audience)

This approach allows you to maintain an engaging visual presentation while providing comprehensive information for reference.

6. Presentations are meant to support the speaker — not replace them

Your design should enhance the message without distracting from it. Visually appealing slides will guide the audience through the content.

As a graphic designer, I highly recommend a clean, minimalist approach to presentation slide design. Strategic use of images, icons, and data visualizations will convey complex information more effectively than walls of text.

7. For slide presentation design, always keep the brand guidelines in mind

Consistency in colors, fonts, and visual style helps reinforce brand identity and creates a cohesive look across all materials.

Effective presentation design is about striking the right balance between information and visual appeal. By focusing on clear communication, you can have presentations that look great and deliver results.
