Give your branding and marketing renewed life

by Nancy Ruzow

Last weekend, I hopped on a ferry to Fire Island and returned to the scene of my accident, when I tore my hamstring from the bone. I’m doing great and had so much fun hanging out with my college friend, taking in the Atlantic Ocean waves (sitting on the beach, we saw dolphins dancing and a whale breaching), and eating some great seafood with a side of laughter.

Now, let’s talk about “returning to the scene of the accident.” Sound familiar? That’s because it’s a killer metaphor for revisiting those cringe-worthy campaigns and branding fails we’d rather forget. Instead of sweeping them under the rug, it’s time to dig deep, figure out what went off the rails, and flip those flops into brand victories.

Analyzing the aftermath

Just as an accident scene offers clues about what went wrong (water on floor, slipped, you know the rest), assessing a failed branding effort gives you the clues you need to crack the case. Was it the messaging? The visuals? Maybe your target audience was MIA? Whatever it was, this is your chance to uncover those golden growth opportunities. Because who needs perfection when you can make progress?

Learning from marketing and rebranding failures

Remember when Tropicana tried to get all artsy with their packaging back in 2009? Yeah, consumers weren’t exactly lining up to applaud. They quickly backtracked to the OG design, proving that messing with iconic brand elements can backfire like a bad TikTok trend. The takeaway? Keep what works and make sure any changes vibe with your audience, or risk a branding shipwreck.

The role of marketing materials

Your marketing materials are the unsung heroes of brand design—keeping everything from your website to your social media in line. Without a solid brand style guide, your visuals are like a band with no rhythm. Consistency isn’t just a buzzword; it’s what builds recognition, trust, and brand loyalty that has customers returning for more.

The path to brand resilience

So, you’ve returned to the scene of your branding “accident.” Good for you! This isn’t about wallowing in failure; it’s about showing your customers that you’re resilient, adaptable, and ready to bounce back better than ever. They’ll see a brand that’s not afraid to learn and evolve, and that’s how you build reputation and trust.
